Here we are-it’s February. Have you been able to consistently keep your 2025 New Year’s resolutions? If not, you are not alone. Researchers report that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions follow through. Studies show that 43% quit by the end of January. Even though most of them involve new health plans, nurturing habits for maintaining a healthy mouth are commonly overlooked.
Dr. Chandni Mahindra, founder of DeLand Smiles is not surprised that optimal oral health, which is critical to overall well-being, is not on the new year bucket list for most people.
She says, “An overwhelming number of people do not give much thought to caring for their teeth and gums until there’s a problem, like a cavity, and when that’s treated, they go on about their business until they need help again.”
Adapting simple dental routines is critical to decreasing your chances of developing periodontitis, a gum disease that has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, lung infections, and various cancers.
While you may feel you have already given up on succeeding at some of the items on your 2025 agenda, there is hope for at least one positive change that is easy to obtain. Keeping up with a consistent oral health routine is a goal that anyone can achieve.
Dr. Mahindra recommends starting with the basics, like brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled brush for two minutes twice a day and water flossing. From there, you can step up your oral health easily. As you become more in tune with the connection of your mouth to the rest of your body, add a few more small steps.
Staying hydrated and avoiding the frequency of eating sugary and acidic treats will do wonders for revamping your oral health care,” reveals Dr. Mahindra. “Instead, adopt tooth-friendly options like cheese, nuts, or crunchy vegetables.”
Before long, instead of dreading seeing your dentist, you may find yourself eager to show off your new baby pink gums and pearly whites. It’s important to have dental exams every six months, or more often if you have periodontal problems.
Dr. Mahindra cautions, “Pay attention to any pain in your mouth, no matter how minor. An infection in the mouth can travel throughout the body. Dental cleanings and exams will alert you to potential issues before they become serious problems. Think of your dental health professionals as your accountability buddies for keeping your teeth and gums in great shape.”
Maybe there are smile goals you aspire to, from whiter teeth to a straighter smile. The new year is the perfect time to pursue these dreams with greater zeal, as you take care of the dental essentials which are the foundation for your mouth.
